Going up the Hunter

Starting in the foothills of the Barrington Tops the Hunter River spills from Glenbawn Dam as a shallow stream, before becoming a proper river running some 90km to the coast. The pools below the dam hold some fish as well as enough water to paddle a canoe. However, the better fishing is to be found further downstream. The plain truth is that the best Hunter River fishing starts just above the small historical township of Morpeth. This is where the water becomes fishable from boats of any size. Also,below this point the river becomes tidal and you find fresh and saltwater species mixing together. All this makes the upper Hunter a great destination for a small boat or canoe fishermen.
