As my uncle Horatio always said, boating needn't be expensive if you put your mind to the task. And one of the best ways to get afloat this summer without breaking the bank is a canoe. Canoes have improved out of sight since young blokes like me oncetacked corrugated sheets into home-made craft. Modern plastic sit-on canoes are superb craft and loads of fun during the warm days of summer. Considering some of the waterways we have around our coastal cities kayaks are probably the best craft to own. They don't require boat ramps and just about any beach or waterfront park gives you access to the water. If you have a car you can carry a kayak as it's light and easy to roof top. We've covered the subject of roof-topping in past issues but basically all you need is a good set of sturdy roof racks.
