Staaten

The remotely located Staaten River in Queensland's Gulf country is rarely fished by anglers, but roving fishing writer DICK EUSSEN was able to visit there recently. Little is known about the Staaten River, north-east from Karumba, first named by Dutchsea explorer Jan Carstenz, commander of the ships, Pera and Arnhem in 1623. Even earlier in 1606, the Dutch ship, Duyfken had named a number of coastal features on the first known journey of discovery of Van Diemens Land, later named Australia by Flinders. Unfortunately, the English explorers changed the names of many Dutch discoveries. For instance the Wenlock River was previously the Batavia River, and the Pennefather River was originally named the Coen River by the Dutch.
