A farmer discusses horses, horsepower, a dodgy Nuffield and retirement. Andrew Brown was born in 1937 to a farming family in Renfrewshire when the farm's horsepower was just that, working Clydesdales. The farm was on the south side of Glasgow and was a general mixed enterprise; the stock was dairy Ayrshire cows, sheep and pigs and it ran to about 180 acres. The main crop was grass, which was either grazed or made into hay, and when reseeding this would be over-sown with barley. The size of the holding was a little unusual for the period; despite one of the neighbouring farms being 200 acres a reasonable holding would normally have been 90 to 100 acres.
