Treatment of swine summer infertility syndrome by means of oxytocin under field conditions.

The effect of oxytocin in reducing the decline in fertility in sows during the summer season was studied. During each month of the year, 60 sows were (1) inseminated with semen supplemented with 4 IU oxytocin, (2) injected with 4 IU oxytocin into the vulva lip mucosa at the time of insemination or (3) inseminated without oxytocin (controls). During the low fertility season (July-September), farrowing rate averaged 77.02, 56.25 and 54.39% for the 3 groups respectively (P<0.05), and litter size 10.77±0.28, 10.45 ±0.31 and 8.53±0.34 (P<0.05). Litter size during the other seasons was also higher for the treated groups than for controls (P<0.05), but differences in farrowing rates were not significant.
