Organic school meals for our children may seem a pipe-dream but perhaps not as far away as you think. The key lies in understanding public procurement - the way public bodies buy food. Take schools. More than 10 times as many meals are consumed eachyear in schools as in NHS hospitals, and parents spend 1 billion pound on them. The school authorities serving up these meals are required to ensure that they are providing 'best value' but too often the cheapest wins. That means excessive amounts of fat, sugar and salt in school meals, according to Lizzie Vann, founder of the organic children's food company Organix. who is currently researching the issue. The result? School food may not even meet the government's healthy eating guidelines.
