"The age through which we have been passing has certainly not been devoid of high ideals. But in its efforts to get its head above the clouds it has only too effectively lost touch with Mother Earth, largely because it has accepted too hastily the view that the natural processes by which life is maintained are purely material and can be left to the physical scientists and technicians. ... Preoccupied with the pursuit of power through technical achievement as the quickest means of raising the so-called 'standard of living', Western civilisation has neglected the cultivation of that fertility withoui which power becomes sterile and, ultimately, self-destructive."
