The essence of organic philosophy was expressed in imaginative form early this century by Walter de ta Mare in his short story The Wharf. In it, a woman suffers a nightmare which precipitates a nervous illness. While recuperating on a farm, she is given a gentle lecture by the farmer on the value of the 'midden-heap'. What in her dream had been a "foul mass" is revealed to her as "the very secret of all that is most precious in the living things of the world", and as part of the cycle of nature which enables life to continue and the beauty of plants to flourish. "We farmers couldn't do without it, ma'am."
