The future should not look like the past

At the International Congress of Emerging Infectious Diseases (Atlanta, GA, USA; March, 19-22), sessions devoted to the management of everyday bacterial infections seen in the hospital and community highlighted the increasing frequency of antibiotic resistance, and the severity of its consequences. The impression given was that clinicians are being rendered powerless against these drug-resistant microbes and the situation is likely to worsen.
