In Kerala, 54 deaths that took place in health institutions in chikungunya affected areas during the recent outbreak were retrospectively reviewed by the outbreak investigation team. Evidence of clinical features of chikungunya could be observed only in three deaths, all of whom had a history of nephropathy and diabetes. The causes of death were recorded as nephropathy in one and myocarditis in two cases.
