Diagnosis of Cryptosporidiosis in Cattle

Latex agglutination test was standardised for the detection of cryptosporidial antigen in the faecal sample of cattle. Out of 184 faecal samples of calves and adults from in and around Bangalore, 23 samples positive for Cryptosporidium oocysts by faecal microscopy and 21 samples which did not reveal cryptosporidial oocysts on faecal microscopy were detected by the latex agglutination test. The sensitivity and specificity was found to be 92 and 86.79 per cent respectively. The test was rapid, sensitive, easy to perform, the reagents for the test were stable at 4°C and large number of samples could be processed at a time.
