Stroke patients' perceptions of home blood pressure monitoring: a qualitative study

Hypertension is the leading modifiable risk factor for stroke, but management of hypertension in the community is often inadequate. The availability of validated electronic blood pressure monitors allows patients to self-monitor at home and this has been associated with improved blood pressure control. There is no published research on the experiences of stroke patients who self-monitor. A qualitative study was carried out of 26 stroke patients from South London who had completed the intervention arm of a community-based randomised controlled trial of self-monitoring with nurse-led telephone support in 381 stroke patients.
