Ongoing research examines reduced weed and pest pressure. Crop rotation, once the backbone of Midwestern agriculture, conditioned soils, broke pest cycles and renewed fertility. Those benefits are enjoying a rebirth with expanding cover crops. Some say selected cover crops appear to condition the soil for reduced weed and pest pressure. Ryegrass cover crops, for example, control glyphosate-tolerant weeds, and oilseed radishes are said to control nematodes, suggests Scott Wohltman, cover crop lead, LaCrosse Forage and Turf in Wisconsin.
