On April 1, 2001, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) was inaugurated by integrating 15 research institutes and one training facility under the Agency of Industrial Science and Technology, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (AIST of MITI). The new AIST employs 3,242 employees, in which 2,447 are research staff. Although the institute is a national institute, it is an independent legal person and independent from any of the ministries. However, the institute succeeds all of the facilities of the old Agency of Industrial Science and Technology. The head quarter of the national institute is located in the building of the old Agency of Industrial Science and Technology of the former Ministry of International Trade and Industry. The former research institutes have been restructured into 23 research centers, 22 research institutes, 7 research laboratories and computer center, etc.
