Associate Prof. Nakajima et al. of the School of Science & Engineering, Keio University, first succeeded in soft-landing cluster ions on a substrate jointly with Director Kaya of the Molecular Science Research Laboratory, Okazaki National Joint Research Organization. This success is derived from the relief of the impact with a cushion and deposit of mass separated ion molecules without damage to them. The new technique makes a substrate conductive for cooling in order to soft-land mass separated organic metal complex ions synthesized in the vapor phase by a laser evaporation on it without their destruction and then 10 to 30 inert gas atomic layer adhere to the substrate. If the substrate is a little warmed after this deposit, inert gasses evaporate and only the deposited molecules remain.
