The Australian pelican

I do love a pelican (Photo.1). They are large amazing flyers, yet once they are on the ground, they bumble around quite merrily, waiting for you to toss them fish or offal if you are fishing close by. From my childhood I have many fond memories of pelicans at boat ramps, waiting patiently in small to large groups. Every now and then they would flash their huge wings in order to get your attention. These are beautiful, comforting and fun memories. The colouring on their large beaks changes with the breeding season to help entice the ladies. What more could you want in a bird than a magnificent, clownish ladies' man?
