Evonik Industries and Jiangsu Zhongneng Polysilicon Technology Development, a wholly owned subsidiary of GCL-Poly Energy Holdings (Hong Kong), have signed a letter of intent to establish a joint venture to produce fumed silica and ultrapure silicon tetrachloride in China. Evonik will hold a 60% share in the jv. The plants, which will have a combined capacity of more than 20,000 m.t./year, will be built at Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, and are scheduled to start production in 2016. GCL-Poly, a company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, specializes in generating green and conventional energy. Jiangsu Zhongneng is a leading manufacturer of polycrystalline silicon (PCS). Silicon tetrachloride is a by-product of PCS production, and the jv will purchase the product to produce Aerosil-branded fumed silica and Siridion STC HP ultrapure silicon tetrachloride.
