Training the patient to do peritoneal dialysis (PD) safely is criticalto the success of the modality. Given thatthe patient may be uremic, anemic, depressed, and frightened, this can be a somewhat daunting task. In the new ISPD Guidelines on Patient Training published in this issue of Pen'toneal Dialysis International, Bernardini, Price, and Figueiredo have done a magnificent job in putting together an outline of the process of training the patient (1). They note thatthere is a paucity of well-done studies examining different methods of training. They proceed in the guidelines by applying basic teaching principles to the teaching of performance of PD. They outline the content, use of aids, where the training should occur, duration of training, and, most importantly, teaching methods to use with PD patients.
