Discussing polyurethane elastomers in armour applications, Dr Erik Carton, of the TNO Ballistics, Explosions and Protection group at Rijswijk, the Netherlands, said bulk polymers/elastomers are not that strong, but show huge deformability and visco-elastic damping, which is a new energy dump for ballistic applications.
