An eloquent editorial recently published by Dr. Michael Droller details the initiatives suggested by the Institute of Medicine, calling for an overhaul of the clinical trials system. Such initiative is based on "the perceived failure of the health care system in the United States to generate medical evidence ... that could efficiently and meaningfully be translated into practice." Accordingly, a new clinical research system has been proposed that calls for greater involvement of community practitioners in clinical trials, supplemented by traditional personnel with research expertise, such as study design specialists, research coordinators, and methodologists.
