Effects of CMO Regulations on the Feed Mix Industry: Minutes of a Meeting Organised by the Research Institute of Feed Technology of the International Research Association of Feed Technology

The tightening up of the regulations on the labelling and traceability of GM food and feed products by EU regulations 1829/2003 and 1830/2003 and its implementation by April 2004 without a transition period clearly affects the future production of mixed feed. This was the conclusion reached by numerous experts attending a meeting organised by the IFF on 30 March 2004 on the institute's premises in Braunschweig-Thune. The participants considered the incompleteness of these regulations to be critical; contradictions and deficiencies, etc., in the content lead to precarious situations for additive producers and compound feed industries due to the" unclear legal situation. The attitude of those interest groups which reject green genetic engineering out-of-hand by ignoring knowledge gained so far, was considered to be irresponsible and hostile to science, particularly in the face of the world's growing food problem.
