Results from a computer modelling study of the growth potential for eggs and poultrymeat output show that production could be further improved by increasing the budget outlay and formulating suitable price policies to encourage farmers to expand. Poultry production in India is gaining in importance because of its growing contribution to livestock production from the introduction if high yielding hybrid poultry stock and its leading position in supplying food proteins, poultrymeat and eggs. For the past three decades the poultry industry has witnessed a spectacular growth. During this period, egg production has increased at the rate of 8.2%/annum and poultrymeat production at 5.6%. Poultrymeat is the only animal protein generally consumed by all Indian non-vegetarians without any religious restriction. Moreover, inclusion of eggs in the vegetarian diet has also accelerated the growth of this industry. The per capita consumption of poultrymeat and egg has increased nearly three times over the period1961-1990 (Fig 2 and 4) despite the ever-increasing size of the human population. This shows the important opportunity for poultry products in the Indian diet.
