PARIS-France issued a series of rules March 20 to transpose European Union directives on genetically modified crops into national law,and officials said the decrees will tighten the country's existing regulatory framework for planting bioengineered maize and for field testing.EU Directive 2001/18/EC on the Deliberate Release into the Environment of Genetically Modified Organisms was transposed by ministerial decree rather than legislation in Parliament,drawing strong criticism from GM crop opponents and bringing the issue into the presidential and legislative election campaign.
