COFFEE SITUATION

Global production of coffee for the crop year 2004-05 is estimated at 119.0 Million bags [113.4 Million bags as per ICO] compared to previous year's production of 109.5 Million bags [103.2 Million bags as per ICO], recording an increase 8.7 per cent.The increase in world coffee crop was a result of higher Brazilian production which was placed at 41.7 Million bags compared to 32.0 Million bags reported in 2003-04, an increase of 30.3 per cent. A mixed trend wasnoticed in respect of production in other countries. The major producing countries that reported decrease in their crop during 2004-05 include Ethiopia [[-] 7.7 %], Vietnam [[-] 5.6 %] and Cote d'lvoire [[-] 3.7 %]. The countries that reported higher production during 2004-05 include India [7.6 %] and Columbia [4.9 %] apart from Brazil. Brazil continued to be the leading coffee producer with a share of 35.0 percent in 2004-05. Brazil was followed by Vietnam [11.9 %] surpassing Columbia [9.7 %]. India was placed at the fifth position with a share of 4.1 per cent.
