Observations from a quarter century of evaluating reactions of sweet corn hybrids in disease nurseries.

This article presents summary of observations and trends from more than a quarter century of evaluating sweet corn hybrids in University of Illinois disease nurseries. Nearly 3 700 sweet corn hybrids have been tested in Univeristy of Illinois disease nurseries in the past 27 years, including commercial and pre-commercial hybrids from 40 private and public swet corn breeding programs located in North America, South America, Asia, and Europe. Rections of sweet corn hybrids to different diseases such as common rust (Puccinia sorghi), corn leaf blight (Exserohilum turcicum [Setosphaeria turcica]), Stewart's wilt (Pantoea stewartii), Maize dwarf mosaic virus, common smut (Ustilago maydis) and reactions to postemergence herbicides are discussed.Digital Object Identifier http://dx.doi.org/10.1094/PDIS-03-11-0236
