Raisins and water-soaked fingers have something in common - wrinkles. The way these wrinkles form is at the heart of a new method to make advanced materials for a broad range of applications, including microfluidic systems, photonic devices, controllable adhesive surfaces, antireflective coatings, and antifouling surfaces that prevent microbial buildup. Instead of the randomly placed wrinkles of raisins and wet fingers, however, the new method precisely controls the size, shape, and pattern of wrinkles formed - an important feature for processes used to design materials with specific characteristics.
