Chemical engineers at Purdue Univ. envision mobile plants that would convert agricultural waste and other biomass into biofuels in the field. The approach sidesteps a fundamental economic hurdle in biofuel production — the high cost of transporting biomass because of its bulk volume — since liquid fuel is far more economical to transport.
