The struggling economy has led some chemical processors to rely on lowest-cost methods of buying components, such as purchasing off-brand products through Internet or catalog sources. But snubbing quality branded products or bypassing proven industrial supply-chain sources can lead to unintended - and very costly - consequences, such as more-frequent equipment failures and longer downtimes, as well as loss of access to valuable engineering resources.
