In 1999 tilting trains were put into service on some main lines on the railway network in Norway. Shortly after the introduction in commercial service, a broken wheelset axle on a bogie of one of the multiple train units of type Signature was experienced. Because of the accident, measurements were carried out in order to measure stresses at critical locations on an equipped wheelset axle of a tilting train running at high cant deficiencies in small-radius curves on the Dovre Line between Oslo and Trondheim. The measured stresses along the line were positioned relative to track geometry and track irregularities. It was observed that high stresses were occuring when the train was running in zones consisting of small-radius curves. These curves were mainly featured by local track irregularities due to alignment causing a movement of the wheelset axle in lateral direction. According to the tests, it was established a good univesal correlation between high stresses on the wheelset axle at critical locations and track irregularities in small-radius curves. EN 13104 is being defined for railway applications in order to design powered wheelset axles for conventional as well as for tilting trains. It will be discussed whether track consisting of zones of small-radius curves having track irregularities could meet the requirements of the standard assuming normal railway operating conditions for tilting trains curving at high cant deficiencies.
