The first part of this chapter, written by Lisabeth During, reviews three new books in film theory: Dudley Andrew's What Cinema Is! (Wiley-Blackwell [2010]), a new edition of two volumes of the writings of Béla Balász (Berghahn Books [2010]), and Paula Amad's Counter-Archive: Film, the Everyday, and Albert Kahn's Archives de la Planète (ColUP [2010]), in the context of a consideration of the history and futures of the classic questions of film theory. Deborah Levitt is the author of the second part, devoted to books on film music appearing in 2010: Film Music: A Very Short Introduction by Kathryn Kalinak (OUP [2010]), Dreams of Difference, Songs of the Same: The Musical Moment in Film by Amy Herzog (UMinnP [2010]), and Sync: Stylistics of Hieroglyphic Time by James Tobias (TempleUP [2010]). The last two sections, following the works being reviewed, look at affect's emergence as a key term for moving image theory today.
