Imperial expands its international focus

Earlier this year, World Tobacco interviewed Imperial Tobacco's group sales and marketing director, BRUCE DAVIDSON, and here we conclude that interview, the first part of which, concerning his company's investment in the People's Republic of China, was included in the May issue. The investment that Imperial is currently making in Turkey represents something of a departure because, whereas previous expansions have involved the purchase of ready-made companies, this is a Greenfield project I believe. Yes it is. We knew that Turkey is the seventh largest market and still growing, and we knew from selling our brands in duty-free that Davidoff and West are popular there. And we knew that there are a lot of Turkish people living and working in Germany, so there were a lot of indicators that said Turkey would be a good market for us to look to penetrate. And with the laws, clearly importing was not an option, so we reached the conclusion that a Greenfield site was the best route for us.
