The last few years have seen a maelstrom of merger and acquisition activity throughout the global industry. The landscape of tobacco product manufacturers has changed dramatically through consolidation as a result of the top multinationals making major acquisitions: PMI's acquisition of Sampoerna and in Colombia; JTI purchasing Gallaher; Imperial acquiring Altadis. While these landmark acquisitions have grabbed headlines, several other significant moves have characterised the last six months: Swedish Match acquired Cigars International; BAT purchased holding group Skandinavisk Tobakskompagni (including well-known names such as Denmark's House of Prince, Sweden's Fiedler and Lundgren, and Norway's JT Tiede-manns) while BAT's acquisition of Turkish state manufacturer Tekel seems to be progressing smoothly, with the sale approved by the country's privatisation authorities.
