The influence of ultrasound (US) on dye solutions and auxiliaries was investigated This was before the offer of these products within a normal drum dyeing process. The apparatus used to treat the solutions was the Sonoreaktor SR1000. Using microprocessor control the mains voltage was converted to 40 Khz frequency, which then direcdy induced cavitation within the solution. To study the potential of US on leather dyeing, the penetration of various powder and liquid dyes was examined, and the effects of various combinations of fatliquors and retannages on both wet blue and crust leather observed. The US pre-treatment was investigated using: 1. Dyes with and without US, 2. Dyes with and without auxiliaries 3. Fatliquors with and without US 4. Syntan, polymer and mimosa retanning agents with and without US.
