World Leather's retiring sales manager for North America, Jim Haggerty, achieved a unique double accolade at the 2016 American Leather Chemists Association (ALCA) Convention in June. He won the Alsop Award, established in 1939 in memory of the late W. K. Alsop, and presented "for outstanding scientific or technical contributions to the leather industry". The award was sponsored by Tannin Corporation until 2008. ALCA itself sponsored the award from 2008 until 2011 at which time Lanxess became its new official sponsor. Later in the evening, he was also named as the winner for 2016 of the Fred O'Flaherty Service Award, established by ALCA in 1973 to recognise members who have over a period of time made "significant contributions" to the association or to the leather and leather products industries through ALCA.
