A window into the past

The 137', three-masted schooner DENIS SULLIVAN is a window into the Great Lakes' rich maritime past that can be seen on Lake Michigan during the summer months. She is a reproduction that typifies vessels from over a century ago, when ships and boats under sail here were common. William Bates's schooners CHALLENGE and CLIPPER CITY (see the Bates sidebar on page 78) were among the inspirations for her design. Launched in 2000, DENIS SULLIVAN is operated by the Wisconsin Lake Schooner Education Association (WLSEA), which spent five years building the wooden schooner on Milwaukee's lakefront. The vessel was named in honor of Capt. Denis Sullivan, a prominent 19th-century Great Lakes sailor and businessman who sailed the schooner MOONLIGHT from 1874 to 1885. Under his command, MOONLIGHT enjoyed a reputation as the region's fastest schooner, and was known as the "Queen of the Lakes."
