Alan Nunes, proprietor of Bristol Seacraft in Rhode Island, has taken up the construction of a classic 11'5" sailing dinghy, the Penguin, designed by Phillip Rhodes in 1940. He is using mahogany and mahogany plywood to build boats that meet the Penguin Class Dinghy Association specifications, using 1/4" plywood for the planking and 3/4" for the frames and transoms. The boats are encapsulated in epoxy and given a high-gloss finish. "The result is a vessel that has the appearance and feel of a classic wooden boat with the finish of a world-class yacht and the durability and ease of maintenance of a contemporary composite craft," Nunes said.
