Reporting "Eugene Kaspersky, Virus Hunter" (page 86), a profile of the security software magnate, presented some challenges for contributing editor Noah Shachtman. Shachtman first met Kaspersky at a "tequila-soaked conference" in Cancun, Mexico. "Number one rule of journalism: Never try to drink with Russians," he says. "Even though I refused four out of five shots, I still was reduced to a slobbering puddle." Shachtman later traveled to Moscow, where he and Kaspersky consumed bear meat and horseradish vodka and later watched sci-fi movies in Kasperksy's apartment eating blintzes and canned caviar. The quality time paid off: "Kaspersky started off fairly closed," he says, "but as time went on he talked pretty frankly."
