Fifteen years ago, Aardman, the UK-based stop-motion animation house behind Wallace & Gromit and Chicken Run, pitched a pirate movie to a Hollywood studio. The idea was promptly sent to Davey Jones' locker. "They said, 'Nobody likes pirates, because they go around stealing things and killing people,'" Aardman cofounder Peter Lord says. Johnny Depp changed all that, and in 2008 Lord and company struck a deal with another studio, Sony Pictures, for a different high-seas project: The Pirates! Band of Misfits.
