As a veteran of the US Air Force bomb tech team, writer Brian Gastner drew on his own experience disarming explosives to retrace the steps of the bomb squad that responded to the Boston Marathon attacks (page 184). He later tagged along while the team checked the TD Garden arena before a fund-raiser concert for the victims. "I hadn't been on that kind of sweep since I was in the military," Gastner says.
