Fake blood doesn't have to be water-based, but if your haunted house is going to use a lot of it, that helps: This slightly thicker-than-blood concoction is easy to dilute if your effects really require buckets of the stuff. The rest of the ingredients here are tailored to dissolve readily in H_2O, with plenty of polarized -OH tags that like to bond with the hydrogen in water. PVP made its debut in real blood: WWII medical personnel used it as a plasma substitute, providing extra volume to maintain blood pressure and ferry red corpuscles throughout the body. In this context, instead of keeping blood flowing, PVP sets it in place by forming a sticky, wet-looking film. The polymer works kind of like a cell membrane: Its pyrrolidone rings associate with the water-based blood, while its hydropho-bic vinyl backbone is repelled, forming a shiny coating.
