No words, just Edward Snowden wrapped in an American flag-that was the provocative (we thought) cover of our September issue, which featured an exclusive profile of the NSA whistle-blower by longtime NSA watcher James Bamford ("The Most Wanted Man in the World"). The picture was taken by the celebrated photographer Pla-ton. And provocative it was: For every reader who requested a framed copy and pledged their loyalty to Snowden's cause, another reported tearing off the cover and demanded we cancel their subscription. But almost universally beloved? The charming 2011 snapshot (below right) of Snowden in black tie with former NSA and CIA director Michael Hayden.
