Heroic Efforts: The Emotional Culture of Search and Rescue Volunteers Return to Topnnby Jennifer Lois, PhD, University of Colorado at Boulder, 2000, 239 pagesnnThis study examines the culture of search and rescue volunteers. The data are drawn from a 5½-year ethnographic study with a volunteer search and rescue group in a mountain resort town in the western United States. The author recognizes that rescuers often put themselves at great physical and emotional risk to rescue injured or stranded individuals, search for lost parties, and recover dead bodies. Throughout this study, there is an emphasis on how rescuers' attempts to deal with the demands of membership created a unique group culture that emphasized certain beliefs about heroism and emotions.
