There is currently no established best practice for managing data quality in the water industry. Poor quality data are causing issues for all companies, but in some cases no one is sure of the real impacts and how much should be invested in dealing with those issues. There have been various data quality improvement ini- tiatives within companies, but these efforts have focused on "business" data such as asset / infrastructure, job and customer records, and not all have been successful. Water companies are becoming much more reliant on telemetry and Ofwat also requires water companies to make better use of telemetry data to drive benefits through the entire asset management life cycle. However, there is widespread concern that data quality is not always fit for purpose, and there is often a disparity between the investment made in integrating telemetry data into the business and ensuring that the level of quality can support all intended uses.
