The proposed Thames Tunnel continues to spark debate ahead of phase two of the consultation process, due to begin in the autumn this year (phase one closed in January). At present 39M tonnes of sewage is being pumped into the River Thames every year due to the limited capacity of the city's Victorian sewer network. There is no doubt that the 'super sewer' is urgently required to solve the _ problem, however, agreeing a route is not quite so easy - no one wants the work to be carried out in their 'backyard'. Hammersmith and Fulham Council has voiced its opposition to the scheme, with worries over possible job losses and the impact on new homes.
