"The first time I ever saw the top of Mount Washington up close was the day I landed on it," explained pilot Carmon Onofrio. In 1947, Onofrio landed atop the Granite State's famous mountain a total of 43 times. "I knew I could do it safely. Of course, when I did do it, my first landing didn't turn out to be as safe as I had planned. It was really something." During more than 40 years of flying, Onofrio had dusted more than his share of crops around New England. But landing atop the icy mountain was a nervous change of pace. "I'm the only pilot who ever landed a plane up there," the crusty barnstormer declared.
