Early on the morning of March 28, 2004, a fierce storm with heavy rain, high wind, and pounding surf bullied its way off the Atlantic and into the mountainous coastline of southeastern Brazil. Streets flooded, roofs were blown off homes, and several casualties were reported. Since March is the height of the wet season in South America, was this just a humdrum rainstorm turned unusually violent? Not by a long shot. Around the world, news quickly spread that the first hurricane in recorded history had developed in the south Atlantic.
