The 2017 spring cleanup on Birmingham's waterways raised around 50 tons from the canal bed, less than in some previous years, raising hopes that the Midlands canals are continuing to get cleaner. The BCN event is the biggest and most intensely organised on the system. This year, around 70 volunteers gave more than 1,000 hours over the two-day event, organised by the IWA Waterway Recovery Group in conjunction with the BCN Society and the Canal & River Trust. The clean-up, on the first weekend of April, tackled Wolverhampton and the area around Horseley Fields Junction, the first time it has been held on this section.
