The Cotswold Canals Trust has opened its third visitor centre, at the historic Gatehouse of Bond's Mill industrial estate near Stonehouse. The Grade Ⅱ-listed building alongside the Stroudwater Navigation Canal at Stonehouse was originally built as part of a World War Ⅱ defence line protecting Bristol and Avonmouth docks. The striking octagonal brick tower housed a gun emplacement to protect the Bond's Mill estate, which opened in the 1930s. Bond's Mill was a centre for naval and aviation instrument production, particularly Sperry Gyroscopes, whose factory operated there from 1938 to 1969.
