Mel Davis produces classically lined boats that are fitted out with reclaimed wood by Jim Birch; together they create a distinctive alternative to some of the more mass-produced offerings on the market. This year the partnership did not disappoint; although it was a late entry and not fully finished, the 62ft traditional narrowboat Joy Louise served as an excellent example of their work. The bow has a little front 'Potters' cabin, which houses a cocooned Beta 10 generator. The well deck behind has the main roof extended over it, giving a useful covered space. Even with the canvas covers in place, it is still light due to a large front window. Glazed doors lead into the bedroom with a cross double bed and a walkway to port. The walk-through bathroom has two built-in wooden chests of drawers, one with a Belfast-style sink on top. Even the shower is bespoke with wood and glass panels.
