A new commercial wharf for canal carrying at Leeds looks finally set to be built, 15 years after the site was purchased by British Waterways. The wharf, at Stourton on the Aire & Calder, could initially take up to 200,000 tonnes of freight annually, with capacity to increase. The original outline planning permission, granted some years ago, expired in April 2018 when funding didn't materialise. But now, with high-profile projects like HS2, Leeds South Bank and Hunslet Riverside going ahead, all hungry for raw materials that might otherwise be delivered by road, the potential is thought to be there.
